Reproductive hormones are closely related to the health of a person's reproductive organs. Menstruation, pregnancy and child sexual development, including men and women, are influenced by reproductive hormones.
Reproductive hormones also affect physical changes as they enter puberty, such as breasts that start to enlarge in girls, and broader breasts in boys.
Types of Reproductive Hormones
Luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) are two reproductive hormones that are commonly known to have a role in the physical changes that occur when entering puberty. But actually there are still many other hormones that contribute to the development and health of the reproductive organs. Here are some of the reproductive hormones:Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
The reproductive hormone FSH is produced in the pituitary gland, which is a gland in the brain the size of a pea. This hormone has an important role in a person's sexual development. In addition to affecting physical changes when entering puberty, FSH hormone in women also has a role in the process of egg formation in the ovaries and also controls the menstrual cycle. Whereas in men, this hormone functions to control sperm production and the development of genital organs.
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
This hormone is also produced in the pituitary gland and has a correlation with the hormone FSH and is complementary. In women, this reproductive hormone affects the physiology of the ovaries, egg production (ovulation), the menstrual cycle, and fertility. While in men, LH stimulates testosterone production, which affects the level of male sperm production.
The hormone testosterone
Testosterone levels in men are higher than women. During puberty, there is an increase in testosterone levels. Then it will decrease after entering the age of 30 years. The function of this hormone in men, including controlling sexual arousal, sperm production, bone density, and also muscle mass, so as to be able to significantly influence physical and emotional changes in men. While the presence of the hormone testosterone in women serves to control mood and sexual arousal, keep bones strong, relieve pain, and maintain cognitive health.
Estrogen hormone
Estrogen hormone levels, inversely proportional to the hormone testosterone in men and women. The hormone estrogen is higher in women, compared to men. The hormone estrogen in women plays a role in sexual development during puberty. Also plays a role in controlling the growth of the uterine wall during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy, and contributes to weight gain or weight loss. For men, one of the functions of estrogen is to control sperm health. However, if estrogen levels in men are too high, there can be a decrease in sperm quality and can cause erectile dysfunction.
